Chicago, IL, March 2 2010
The McCormick Foundation has awarded $210,000 to Roosevelt University’s 2010 Youth Media Technology Fund, which provides mini-grants to Chicago educators and youth media organizations, and enables access to technology necessary for journalism and media production. This initiative supports Roosevelt University’s long-time focus on Chicago-area scholastic journalism and the McCormick Foundation’s commitment to youth media and news literacy work.

In the first round of grant giving, more than $50,000 was awarded to the 26 Chicago schools and 8 nonprofits listed below.

"These small but impactful grants acknowledge the dedication and needs of teachers who want to make a difference," said Clark Bell, director, McCormick Foundation’s Journalism Program. "The awards also recognize the principals who encourage teachers to develop student media in classrooms and after school activities. By supporting those closest to the students, we believe we can make a significant difference for our young people and have the greatest possible impact.”

This fund provides $500 to $2,000 mini-grants to educators and nonprofits organizations serving students in grades 5-12. This funding is used to purchase equipment, such as digital and video cameras, audio equipment, software and computers, to better facilitate students’ work in journalism and integrate media production in the classrooms and extracurricular activities.

“The McCormick Foundation grants give these schools and organizations the chance to do truly exciting things in creating journalism and media –things that would never be possible if they had to rely only on their own resources, said Linda Jones, associate professor of journalism and associate graduate dean, Roosevelt University. “This project is the kind of thing that foundations and media organizations all over the country should look at and say, ‘Wow, we should do that, too.’ Just imagine if they did!”
