DAVID HILLER NAMED NEW PRESIDENT AND CEO OF THE MCCORMICK FOUNDATION
CHICAGO, May 18, 2009
The Board of Directors of the McCormick Foundation announced today the appointment of David D. Hiller as president and chief executive officer, effective in July. Hiller replaces David L. Grange, who will be retiring at the end of June.
“David Hiller brings to this position both great leadership skills and a passion for the philanthropic work of the Foundation,” said Dennis FitzSimons, chairman of the Foundation’s board of directors. “David’s successful career in law, media and journalism, as well as his familiarity with the Foundation’s guiding principles, make him an ideal choice to carry on the legacy of our founder Robert R. McCormick.”
Hiller is the past publisher and chief executive officer of the Los Angeles Times and previously held the same positions at the Chicago Tribune. Hiller joined Tribune Company in 1988 as general counsel and served in a number of other roles, including head of strategy and business development, president of Tribune Interactive, and senior vice president of Tribune Publishing.
Prior to joining Tribune, Hiller was a partner in the Chicago law firm of Sidley & Austin. In addition, he worked in the U. S. Department of Justice as special assistant to the Attorney General and as Associate Deputy Attorney General. Hiller also served as a law clerk to United States Court of Appeals Judge Malcolm Wilkey and Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart.
A native of Chicago, Hiller received a bachelor’s degree from Harvard College and a law degree from Harvard Law School. He has served on the boards of the McCormick Foundation, the Chicago History Museum, and Roosevelt University. While in Los Angeles, Hiller served on the boards of the Orange County Performing Arts Center, United Way of Greater Los Angeles and the Los Angeles World Affairs Council.
“The McCormick Foundation has made important contributions to our community and country for more than half a century,” said Hiller. “I’m privileged to be a part of building on that legacy of service. The work the Foundation and our partners do—in early childhood education, the future of news and journalism, and investing in our communities—has never been more needed.”
